On Call the week of 11/9 – 11/16
It was a busy week for me. I was called in around 4 times. It seems like the on calls weeks have been busy. It seems like it is up and down graph. There has been weeks when I wasn’t called in but these few weeks I have been called to do something or I had to go in because of something. I am not complaining because the money is great when I get called in and to carry the pager for the week.
1. I got called in because 4 laptops wouldn’t work. They have a lot of laptops on the floor but it just seemed it was alot that didn’t work. Two laptops the extended batteries were drained and needs to be plugged in. One of the laptops the screen was rotated, and need to be corrected. The AV also had to be reinstalled. Another one I had to take the extended battery because the battery had an error on the display, but it was out of warranty. Then the other one the tip came loose from the back of the laptop. I then ended up taking another battery and the company has already sent me the a new battery. I charged it over the weekend. I already sent out the bad battery to the company.
2. I had to install a loaner printer and fax machine on the floor because their copier started to jam and they couldn’t print or fax things out.
3. A laptop had a fan error so I installed a loaner laptop until Monday when I come back in. That night I clocked out but I took the laptop apart to clean all of the dust out of the inside. It was pretty dusty. I think I got something screwed up because it is freezing and locking up now. I am going to disassemble it and see if all of the wires are in correctly maybe I missed something at 12:00 AM when I took everything apart.
4. I got called in to check their copier the floor said that it was just scanning in half of the sheets, but I was able to copy, fax, and receive fine. I brought everything back and closed that ticket.
Getting a Cold and On Call
The season is changing and it is the time of year where you are going to get sick. I work in a small office with 4 other people in it. One person was sick last week so guess I got it. I am just sneezing and coughing. The hospital is getting ready to give everyone flu and H1N1 Vacinations and they are mandatory this year. If you don’t get it then you can not work with out it. So I went to the store bought these things today. At least I will have the cough drops for work.

Here is the video that I did. This is my first time doing a video of myself. I have done couple of screencast but no video of myself in front of my digital camera. I think the video came out good. It is a dark but not that bad. Hopefully I will do more of them.

On Call and Getting A Cold
On Call for 8/17/09 – 8/24/09
I haven’t done one of these in a long time. This week I have been on call for work. Here is a little bit about work. I work for a hospital in Syracuse, NY. I am on call one week out of the month. This week was very busy for the on call person (me). I haven’t had a very busy week being on call and it was time for one of those weeks. I think it is great to have one of those weeks once in awhile.
8/21/09 – Got a Call at 4:30 AM but not my problem
8/22/09 – Got a Call at 9:51 AM but not my problem
8/23/09 – Got a Call at 2:06 AM but I had to stop and start a printing service
8/23/09 – Got a Call at 9:50 AM but this time I had to go in and put in loaner fax and printer equipment
How was everyone’s weekend?
On Call Saturday
I didn’t get called in but I got a phone call from operations. I just had them reboot the computer and it took care of the problem. I was also on the phone witha vendor. It didn’t work on my work the application but after doing couple of different things it finally worked on my personal computer. It still doesn’t work on the work computers. I don’t know what is going on with them. We still need to investigate more of that. I was talking with the director of support to get it working. I had to open another connection to a different server then I was able to get into the regular server so that was weird in its self.
On Call and Work
II haven’t been called in for anything. It is mid week so I thought it would be good time to do an on call post and work post all bundled into one post. At work we are trying something new where the on call person is the triage person where they will field the calls where they will work on calls that can be done remotely or at the desk and prioritize the other tickets that can’t be done at the desk. This is the 2nd week of doing it. I think it is good because it gets you talking on the phone with the users, asking questions, really doing something different then just running tickets. What I mean by running tickets is picking the ticket out of the queue and then going to do the ticket. It is help desk for our group. In life you need experience talking on the phone and communicate with the end user face to face. Talking on the phone to the end user and communicating face to face is all ways good to have practice with. This is good experience for an IT person and I am glade we are doing it.
On Call
I didn’t get called in for anything. I got all of the laptops prepped ready to be installed on the mobile carts. I didn’t receive the shipment of USB keyboards that was put in on Wednesday or Thursday. It was one really busy week. We have a running joke that something bad happens when my one supervisor and my manager takes off at the same time something bad is happening for the the week. Does anyone else have that supersition like we do?
On call post for this week
I have finished 9 mobile carts. I didn’t have any more keyboards. I also finished two mini computers. I have 11 more mobile carts to go. I hope they come in today so that I can get them down to the floor with out any problems. Yesterday when I brought the mini computers down we had to move computers around and then they wanted to move the computers again. I said no because engineering needs to come down and make a opening for the lcd monitor and then you can push the monitor to the back of the desk. I moved it once so I am not moving it again. I didn’t spec out your hardware either.
Work and On Call Post
I have been prepping laptops all week. We got all the carts, extended batteries, laptops, and mice. There might be a problem with all of the keyboards that we bought for this. They bought all PS/2 keyboards and not USB. I am still going to continue to prep laptops, and I think I can get 9 carts done. I also got the work order done to drill the tops so that the user can power on the laptop. There is still a lot left to do, but it will get done.
On Monday at work I walked out and there were 6 police cars, a transport prison van and a Crime scene van. Find out that a guy was with his sister didn’t like the service that she was getting. The ER staff could smell alcohol on his breath and called security. The security guard was talking to him and the guy pulled a gun and pointed it at him. The security guard swatted the gun away and another one put a hold on him. There are a lot of crazy people out in this world.
Recap of the week
I was on call for the week. I got called twice and I went into work once to put a spare in for a multi function device. It was a quiet week for being on call. Some weeks will be quiet and some weeks won’t be. I delivered all 18 mobile carts to the different floors. I will be bring two mobilecarts that have a mini computer, a printer, and two computers to two different locations today. I have emailed our copy center because they have a van to transport it in. The engineering department came through and drilled the holes on the mobile carts. So it was a good week I got the project done on time.
The keyword of the day is Hydroxycut reviews.
On Call Post
I forgot to do On Call post for each day I was on call for. So this one post will do for this week. I finally got all of the mobile carts done and to the floors. The Engineering department did excellent job drilling holes so the staff can hit the power button. Hopefully We don’t have to move any of them. I haven’t been called in for anything. I got a call around 7:16 AM but for our attendance servers but I was already coming into work so that really doesn’t count for getting called in.
I still have to prep two computers and two mobile carts for PACS viewing. I will be done with this ISR and I can close it. The two mobile carts have a mini computer attached to the back with a 19″ wide screen monitor. It is pretty cool. The mobile carts are easy to move around with out issue. They will move these mobile carts into the operating rooms so they can look at medical images.
I already prepped two laptops to go on chart racks. When I was done installing them a Doctor put a coffee onto othe laptop. That won’t fly. He moved it off the laptop right away but I found it next to laptop so I moved it. I then did a walk through of that floor and found around 5 cups of liquid on top of the mobile carts or in the basket that is attached to the cart. On one floor we did a second walk through and found the same cup back on the mobile cart. I would think they would get a clue that someone moved the coffee and it shouldn’t be there. I told my manager that he should send an email to the clinical ifnromation person to send out another email telling the nurses and employees that cups of liquid shouldn’t be on these mobile carts. There is no coverage for people spilling stuff in them.
