Dell Inspiron 6000 OS Recovery
I was working on my friends laptop. He got virus infection that I couldn’t get ride of. I eneded up doing the factory recovery. I know the laptop had a recovery partition but I didn’t know the key combination to get into it. I search and search I finally found the key combination. The key combination is CRTL + F11 pushing the keys at the same time at the the dell screen during post. Once you push them then you want to release them. It should go into the recovery partition so you can do a system restore.
It is a nice laptop that he got from dell. When you work on computers don’t think you are a failure if you can’t clean the virus. It is about time and money. You want to find the fastest and most economical way to fix the issue. He got a virus that I couldn’t fix so my last resort was to do the factory recovery. I asked him if there was anything he wanted me to saved and he said no. I was up and running within 20 to 30 mintues with a working laptop that is free of viruses.

great!!!you have no idea how helpful that was for.I really appreciate your help. Just one question however…did you lose all the data saved prior to the recovery or partial??
@Reginald My friend lost all of his data. When you do a system restore you are wiping your drive like you first got it from the store.
If you have a usb laptop hard drive enclosure you can take out your laptop hard drive and try to recover your data if you want to save your data.

Hi Greg! Glad I found your page. I want to wipe out my dell 6000 as well.I want to know though, is if all drivers are automatically installed after doing a factory recovery. How about the OS? Do I need to install one? I bought this laptop 2 years ago and it did not came with any single disc. Please Help. Thanks
Charie, What the factory install does it will install the OS and all the drivers. It should install everything. My friend didn’t have any disc’s either with his laptop. It worked out in the end. If you want to restore your computer I would give it a try. You can always call dell if you need help. Greg Ellison
Help! I wiped my Inspiron 6000 completely (i.e. deleted the recovery partition) and installed XP. Only now I don’t have drivers. I know, it was stupid. The problem is that I don’t have the recovery/drivers cd. I called Dell, and they politely told me to go to hell since I’m way out of warranty. … I tried going to the dell website and downloading all 20 or 30 drivers that I need, but I still can’t get the damn thing to work! So now I have 8 items in my “other devices” category in my device manager… and I still can’t get on the internet with the poor thing. … What do I do??
Thanks much,
Steve
Thank you very much for this insightful and helpful information!
Great article, It pretty much confirms what most of us know instinctively (or empirically)!
Thanks A Lot!! I too am fixing a friends computer and was looking for a recovery disk…I didnt know about the recovery partition, saved me a lot of work. THanks!!!!
You are welcome Nick. Greg Ellison
10x man, i have looked for that information.
I might add a little tip, i had problems loading the recovery partition with left ctrl + F11, strangly just when i hit the right ctrl + F11 it worked.
So i dont know if the problem is with the laptop or a general problem, but any1 who’s trying to do it dont give up and try it both ways
Try it until it works. Thanks for posting. Greg Ellison
Hi Greg,
I was puling my hair out trying to fix a friends laptop until I found your tip.
Many thanks!

[...] 1. The top post was a blog post about my friend’s laptop. The laptop is a dell inspiron 6000, and I did an OS recovery on it. The laptop had a huge virus, spyware, and malware on it. The best solution was to just reprep the laptop. If you ever need to know how to do it then you might want to check out http://www.gregellison.net/general/dell-inspiron-6000-os-recovery/ [...]

Hi, I have problem with my Inspiron 6000 and find your website here…
When you say “The key combination is CRTL + F11 pushing the keys at the same time at the the dell screen during post”, do you mean by “during post” ? is it the same with during startup?
TIA
