Small Forums And The Upward Battle

I think it is hard for a small forum to get to the next stage. If you make a forum and think if you build it they will come I think you need stop working on it and go home. If you plan your forum out and start marketing and trying to promote it then people will start to come to your forums. If you have a huge user base like Problogger.net starting a forum is very easy and they will transition easily to the forum.
I would like to talk about one small forum that comes to mind because he is promoting his forum the right way. Ryan Grant from lovingtech.net contacted me through my contact us page. It is a very detailed and a lot of planning was involved in creating the email. I think this was great because it made me sit there and read through it. The email talks about how people love the design of his website and they eventually sign up but he wants to grow his user base to the next level. He is asking all of the bloggers in the technology niche to write a post or link to his site in our blogroll. I think the biggest thing that we can take away from this is that he is taking a chance on asking someone to help him to grow his blog.
The question is how do you promote your forum if you are small. You can ask people to write a post about your forum, or post a link on their blogroll. You can also comment on other blogs in the same niche. You can also ask the blog owners if they would like to join the forum to see and get a feel for the forums. If they like the forum they will probably tell their readers about it even more.
If you are a user of a small forum it will help you get involved in the topics on the forum more and it will also help you to start talking with other people. I know I don’t want to pay for a forum I am already paying a lot of money and in this economy I want to keep my money in the bank for the rainy days.
In the comments if you know of a small forum that you think is great and people should visit then post it in the comments of this post.

The thing about Ryan from LovingTech is that he seems to have a plan and he *takes action* on it, which is crucial. I have also endorsed the LovingTech forum and I’m still doing so (they have a link in my sidebar on all my pages) and I myself have over 100 posts on the forum too, so I enjoy checking it out every now and then. Unfortunately I don’t have so much time to hang out there as I wish I did, but I do check it out from time to time.
Klaus @ TechPatio´s last blog ..How To Use Twitter To Get Through To Customer Support In A Jiffy
Hi Greg!
It’s cool way to promote yet maintain your standpoint. I think it is definitely beneficial for a lot of bloggers. Essentially it can be really productive for the forum. All the best, guys!
Now I don’t know how many visitors he gets every day, but if I were in his shoes I would probably wait until the site gets a few thousand hits per day. The most important think when creating a forum is to get people to promote it for you. If you have no blogging friends no one will promote it for free.
So I recommend him to start talking more with bloggers within his niche and build a relationship while at the same time continue to drawing traffic to his site.
When he has both traffic and relationship they will solve the problem for him. Sure it takes time, but personally I would rather wait 2-3 months instead of publishing a forum no one visits.

I ditto Stephen’s take on forums. Growing your blog is important in order to reel-in traffic into a forum.
