My Startup In The Dot Com Life

You decided that you want to get into the internet world. The first thing that you need to do is brainstorm a name that you want to buy. My first name that I thought about when I wanted to buy a domain was it had to be a local domain name. I was thinking everyone and their brother was going to come and visit. I was really wrong in that thinking.

So you have the name then the next step is to go to a registrar and buy the awesome domain that you want. The cool domain that I thought up was www.cnyfindit.com. I still have this domain to this day because it was the first one that I ever bought and it is tied into my web hosting account. The registrar that I went with was GKG.net. I went with them because it was only $10 to buy a domain and it was cheaper then Network Solutions.

I really like Godaddy for my domains now because they are the same price as GKG.net, and they have promotions that GKG.net doesn’t have. If you ever sell your domain most people will have a Godaddy account and it is easier to push your domain to the seller. I think it is a 50 / 50 between how many domains I have between the two registrars.

I want to see how far I can go with my own blog and develop more websites to see where they go. How did you get started in the dot com life? Where do you see yourself going?

Well I’ve been plodding along since 1998, but for years I just did sites for other people (I’m a web developer). From time to time I tried setting up a project, but never had the patience to see it through. A couple of months ago I decided to give it another try, but this time I’m setting up a site and doing a bit of promotion then moving straight on to another. This way I don’t get too impatient when traffic is only slowly increasing!

I have never been a fan of Go Daddy, I was involved with a disaster and them years ago. I still have a few domains listed there but spread my domain name’s out now so I can’t have one giant issue.

I started last year – had a pets blog and a personal blog. I got a new job at the end of the year and decided I didn’t have time for blogging so I let them both go. Started blogging again over Memorial Day weekend and now I find myself about to write some of the SAME stuff on my current blog that I had on the personal blog. Didn’t even preserve the posts, just blew away the WP installation. If I’d kept that same blog, I’d be a year down the road by now. This time I need to stick with it!

I don’t like GoDaddy … just trying to do something as simple as renewing a domain or purchashing a new domain is almost impossible without being offered to buy at least 42 other stuff including a new country and a pair of underpants. It’s reall, really, not easy to use GoDaddy – unless of course you really get into it, but that’s not something I want to spend my time on, on a domain registrator site, I come there for the domains only.

    ’nuff rant.

    Love the “lolcat” picture :)

I have has a few domains and hosting companies over the last couple years. I am currently with godaddy, I went with a larger know company was sick of small company issues with support and features. I have no complaints with godaddy but have heard of some here and there.

I got real serious this year when my real job started to layoff people for the second time. I feel pretty secure with my position but you never know. I figured I would take the skills I have learn over the last 10 years and do my own thing with my free time so I could have a 2nd stream of income.

So far I love it and I learning some much and meeting so many cool and helpful people.
