Gateway MX6121 had Fake AV

The specs of this computer is the following.
CPU: 1.50 GHZ Celeron
RAM: 256 MB
Hard Drive: 50 GB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home SP2
The reason the user brought the laptop to me was that they got the Fake AV on it. I first used ComboFix on the laptop to get the Fake AV uninstalled. ComboFix really works great for the Fake AV smitfruad stuff. You can download ComboFix at bleepingcomputer.com.
Then I downloaded and installed Malwarebytes. It is a very good free spyware / malware scanner. You can download it at www.malwarebytes.org. You just need to pick the free version.
I then uninstalled Mcafee and installed Free AVG. AVG is very nice free AntiVirus software. You can download Free AVG at free.avg.com.
This is what I did to get ride of one of the variants of the Fake AV Crap. What the Fake AV software does it tells the user that they have viruses on the computer and it wants the user to buy the pro version to remove the viruses on the computer. There is different variants of this software. Here are some of the names of the Fake AV: WinAntiSpyware, Antivirus 2008 (recently updated to 2009), Antispyware Pro XP and AntiVirus Lab 2009. There is also a very bad antivirus 2010 out in internet world that is bad. If you go to a website or click on a link the user installs the Fake AV software.
