Do you use inventory software at work?

If you work for a big employer and if you buy a lot of hardware for your organization then you need some sort of inventory software. We have a inhouse software that was made by someone in the IT department long time ago. We have a huge growing list of printers, fax machines, computers, and other devices that are in the realm of the IT department. If you don’t have some sort of inventory management software you can get confused really easy and it is management nightmare.
I think their is three ways you can get inventory software and that is you can make it yourself, buy it, or try the free software out. I am always up for trying things that are free and open source. I think one of the best free apps is Spiceworks which will allow you do network management, Asset management, help desk, pc inventory and software reporting. That is boat load of things that this software can do. What kind of inventory software does your work use? Is it in house, off the shelf software, free software?

We use a a system that was developed for our industry, all though I would like it if it had a little bit more of the bells and whistles.

I wonder when a company is “big enough” to be needing an inventory list?
I’m the CTO of a small 7-8 person company, so we don’t really have inventory lists.

At my work we have over 1500 computers. We have printers, faxes, other computer equipment that are on the floors. We have a stock room that we have spare parts, and new equipment that needs to be installed. We are a big operation. Greg Ellison
